Up Into My Mountain

I'm not sure if I've mentioned that I've come to really like bike rickshaws. At first I feared that they were somehow elitist, but Indian people use them all the time. It's great--if you don't feel you have the time or energy to walk an exhausting 5 blocks or so, you just hop in one and give the guy ten Rupees. The cyclers are all very skinny. I'm not sure if that's because they make very little money, or if that makes them more suited to the job because they're lighter. It's often hard for me to believe that these fragile-looking men are able to pull me, let alone me and two other grown women, which has happened. Yesterday I saw the coolest rickshaw yet: instead of a seat behind the bike, it had a big purple box with windows labeled "Morning Glory Preschool," and it was full of little 3-year-olds. Now that is an eco-friendly school bus.

I went to a free trial of a yoga class yesterday. I liked that it was small, but it was me, two other foreigners, and one possibly Indian woman...it didn't feel quite "authentic." I've heard that yoga is only becoming popular here because of its trendiness in the west anyway. The teacher was a cute little woman, but the way she conducted class resembled a combination of oration by the Great and Powerful Oz and the guy from Silence of the Lambs who orders it to rub the lotion on its skin. "Breeeeathe iiiiiinnnnnn. Breeeaattheee oooouuuut. UUUUPPPP into your MOUUUNNTAAIIINN. Turn your knee in, Annie." I told her I had asthma, though, and she said, "We'll soon get rid of it." Misleading propaganda or real possibility?? Funny how the $40 for 8 sessions seems exorbitant to me here, while at home I pay at least twice that...perhaps I will be investing.
